The political landscape in Alabama is witnessing a new contender for the lieutenant governor's office, as former NFL quarterback A.J. McCarron enters the race.

His candidacy is notably influenced by the legacy of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk. McCarron, who last played for the Cincinnati Bengals, announced his political aspirations in a video, emphasizing the need for fresh faces in leadership roles.

"It's time for political newcomers and outsider candidates like me to lead the battle," McCarron declared, underscoring his commitment to conservative values. He expressed concern over the perceived threats to Alabama's cultural and conservative principles, stating, "Today, Alabama's conservative and cultural values are under attack from every direction. That's why Charlie Kirk's assassination affected so many of us so deeply."

According to The Blaze, McCarron is running as a Republican and recalls his endorsement of President Donald Trump during the 2016 election, positioning himself as an alternative to entrenched political figures. "The Montgomery insiders and career politicians have had their chance. It's time for political newcomers and outsider candidates like me to lead the battle," he asserted.

Joining McCarron in the race are Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, pastor Dean Odle, and Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate. McCarron, a native of Alabama, expressed a deep connection to his home state, saying, "Alabama is my home it's made me who I am, and I feel led from above to give back to the state that has given me so much." He urged voters seeking change to remember his campaign slogan, "A.J. for L.G."

The Alabama primaries are set for May 19, 2026. McCarron's football career includes leading the University of Alabama Crimson Tide to consecutive national championships and playing for teams such as the Houston Texans and the Atlanta Falcons.
