During a segment on MSNBC's "The Last Word," Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his belief that President Donald Trump has "declared war on the city of Chicago."
This statement was made in response to host Jonathan Capehart's inquiry about the recent turnout in Chicago, where Johnson noted, "Yeah very encouraged. Over 100,000 people in the streets throughout the city of Chicago. Some estimated 250,000 people, obviously 7 million around the country. Im certainly encouraged that the people of not just the city of Chicago, but people across the country are really beginning to wake up and see what its going to take to beat back against this authoritarian rule."
As reported by Breitbart, Capehart further questioned whether Johnson's participation in the No Kings rally might place him and Chicago in the "crosshairs of the Trump administration." In response, Johnson asserted, "Look, were already in the mix, right? You know, the President of the United States of America declared war on the city of Chicago. In fact hes declared war on working people across this country."
Johnson emphasized the need for collective organization and clarity in demands, highlighting the importance of funding for schools, healthcare, transportation, and securing good-paying jobs. He underscored these necessities as vital for the American populace, particularly as the wealth gap continues to widen.
Johnson's remarks reflect a broader concern among some leaders about the impact of federal policies on urban centers and working-class citizens. The mayor's call for unity and action underscores the ongoing debate over the role of government in addressing economic disparities and ensuring equitable access to essential services.
