At the CNBC Invest in America Forum held in Washington, DC, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed the audience with a critical message concerning the ongoing government shutdown orchestrated by Chuck Schumer.
Bessent highlighted the potential economic repercussions, stating, "We believe that the shutdown may start costing the U.S. economy up to $15 billion a day."
According to Sean Hannity, Bessent urged moderate Democrats in the Senate to take decisive action, urging them to "break away from the hive of radicalism and do something for the American people because we are starting to cut into muscle here." His remarks underscored the urgency of the situation and the need for bipartisan cooperation to prevent further economic damage.
Bessent also criticized the mainstream media for their perceived bias, suggesting that they would have reacted differently if Republicans were responsible for the shutdown. "And this is a decision the Democrats are making. And one of the reasons that they are not being held to task is because the mainstream media is not coming at them the way they would have if the Republicans were willing to keep the government closed!" he asserted.
In a call to action, Bessent pointed out that a clean Continuing Resolution (CR) had already been passed by Mike Johnson and was in the hands of Leader Thune.
He emphasized the need for moderate Democrats to step up, saying, "Three Democrats have voted for it And right here, right now, I am calling for the moderate Democrats to be heroes, be heroes and reopen the government for the American people!" His appeal reflects a broader conservative perspective that values fiscal responsibility and effective governance.
