Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted a new piece of legislation that will significantly alter the process of purchasing gun barrels in California.
The law, signed on Friday, mandates that all gun barrel transactions be conducted exclusively through licensed firearms dealers. These dealers are now required to perform an "eligibility check" on prospective buyers before completing any sale.
As reported by Breitbart, the legislation, known as SB 704, stipulates that a five-dollar fee will be added to each transaction to cover the cost of this eligibility verification. This new regulation is set to take effect on July 1, 2027, and is poised to introduce a more complex process for law-abiding citizens seeking to purchase gun barrels in the state.
Under the new law, potential buyers will be required to provide extensive personal information as part of the eligibility check. The bill specifies that licensed firearms dealers must "legibly record all of the [required information] on a form to be prescribed by the [CA DOJ] pertaining to the sale or transfer of the firearm barrel." This requirement underscores the state's commitment to stringent gun control measures, which some argue could infringe upon individual freedoms and the right to bear arms.
As the implementation date approaches, questions remain about the impact this legislation will have on the gun industry and individual rights in California.
