The Democratic Party is allegedly delaying votes to reopen the government due to apprehensions of political repercussions from progressive activists who are organizing a nationwide protest dubbed "No Kings," scheduled for October 18.
This claim was made by Senator Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, in a conversation with Newsmax on Wednesday.
According to Newsmax, Mullin stated, "The problem that you have ... is you have Marxists and jihadists running the Democrat Party today. This is not the Democrat Party of JFK anymore. This is extremist."
Mullin pointed fingers at Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, accusing him of succumbing to pressure from the party's far-left wing. He argued that Democrats are obstructing a clean continuing resolution for political, not policy, reasons.
"This CR that we're asking them to vote for is the same CR same language, same numbers that they voted for a year ago when [President] Joe Biden was in office," Mullin explained. "What's changed is, in March the party got taken over by this Marxist and jihadist group."
These remarks were made in the wake of Senate Democrats' rejection of a House-passed stopgap funding bill on Wednesday. This bill would have extended government operations through November 15 while maintaining current spending levels.
The government shutdown has now entered its eighth day, with both sides blaming each other for the deadlock.
Mullin suggested that some Democrats have privately expressed their desire to vote to reopen the government. However, they are allegedly apprehensive about potential backlash from the "No Kings" movement, an anti-President Donald Trump coalition planning rallies across the country.
"They're afraid that if they come out and vote for it before that, they would be chastised and cause themselves a lot of problems," Mullin said. "It has nothing to do with the American people."
Mullin further claimed that Schumer "could end this immediately" by allowing his members to vote freely. "There's plenty of Democrats that actually want to reopen the government," Mullin said. "They just need permission."
Newsmax, a rapidly growing cable news channel in America, is watched by over 30 million people, according to the Reuters Institute. It offers a variety of shows from hosts such as Rob Schmitt, Greta Van Susteren, Greg Kelly, Carl Higbie, and Rob Finnerty.
The current government shutdown is a critical issue affecting the nation. The stalemate continues, with both sides blaming each other. The Democrats' alleged fear of political backlash from the "No Kings" movement seems to be a significant factor in their reluctance to vote to reopen the government.
The question remains: will the Democrats overcome their fears and vote freely to end the shutdown, as suggested by Senator Mullin? Only time will tell.
