Jeff Bezos, the billionaire entrepreneur and former Amazon CEO, has unveiled ambitious plans to construct AI data centers in space.
Speaking at the Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos outlined his vision for these colossal gigawatt-scale facilities, which are set to be established in orbit over the coming decades. The primary advantage of this extraterrestrial endeavor is the ability to tap into the unending supply of solar energy available in space.
In a dialogue with John Elkann, Chairman of Ferrari and Stellantis, Bezos articulated, These giant training clusters, those will be better built in space, because we have solar power there, 24/7. He further emphasized the absence of atmospheric disturbances, stating, There are no clouds and no rain, no weather.
Bezos confidently predicted that the cost of operating these space-based data centers would eventually undercut their terrestrial counterparts, drawing parallels to the evolution of weather and communication satellites. The next step is going to be data centers and then other kinds of manufacturing, he remarked.
According to Gateway Pundit, Bezos also cautioned against the potential for AI to become a speculative bubble akin to the dot-com bust of the early 2000s. He urged for optimism regarding AI's societal benefits, akin to the transformative impact of the internet 25 years ago.
It is important to decorrelate the potential bubbles and their bursting consequences that might or might not happen from the actual reality, he advised.
The energy demands of AI are immense, requiring vast data centers equipped with thousands of high-performance chips and robust cooling systems. As AI technology proliferates, these centers are consuming increasing amounts of electricity globally.
Bezos's space venture, Blue Origin, has long advocated for relocating heavy industry to space, aiming to safeguard Earth's environment from industrial impacts.
