The unfolding saga surrounding Ian Roberts, a migrant accused of deceitfully securing a lucrative position within the Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa, continues to capture public attention.
The Department of Homeland Security recently unveiled a comprehensive list of alleged criminal activities attributed to Roberts, who was apprehended by federal authorities on September 28.
According to The Blaze, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified Roberts as a migrant from Guyana who was unlawfully residing in the United States. During his time in the country, he allegedly engaged in various criminal acts.
"He should never have been serving in a role overseeing children in Iowas largest school district," stated a press release, highlighting the gravity of the situation. When ICE agents confronted Roberts, he attempted to flee but was eventually captured with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol.
"At the time of arrest, a loaded handgun, hunting knife, and $3,000 cash were found in his vehicle. On Oct. 2, he was charged with being an illegal alien in possession of firearms," the ICE statement revealed.
Initially, Roberts found support among some left-leaning individuals, with calls for "radical empathy" to shield him from repercussions. However, as more incriminating evidence emerged, these voices have largely fallen silent. The revelation of Roberts' extensive history of immigration-related interactions has further intensified the situation.
ICE confirmed that he is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals and will face prosecution for his recent offenses.
The hiring process that allowed Roberts to secure his position is now under intense scrutiny. School officials responsible for his employment are facing significant criticism, particularly after it was discovered that Roberts falsified his academic credentials, including a purported doctorate.
This revelation has raised questions about the vetting procedures in place within the school district.
Despite the mounting evidence against Roberts, a small group of students staged a protest at the Iowa Capitol, advocating for his release. Some demonstrators carried signs with the message "Radical Empathy."
A 17-year-old protest organizer expressed, "I dont think anyone really cares about the fact hes illegal. Were just sad about the fact that an extremely nice man that supported us heavily and really strongly is now taken away from us."
