During an appearance on CNN's "State of the Union," Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) criticized President Donald Trump, labeling him a "lawless president" and accusing him of "illegally withholding funds.

".

The discussion, hosted by Jake Tapper, centered on the impending meeting between President Trump and congressional leaders at the White House, amid concerns over government funding.

As reported by Breitbart, Tapper questioned Van Hollen about his stance on a potential clean Continuing Resolution (CR) for government funding, noting Speaker Mike Johnson's indication that no concessions would be offered.

Van Hollen responded, "Well, Jake, its good to see the president finally get off the golf course and decide to talk and avoid the government shutdown. Hes been taking us to, and hes been much more focused, as we all know, on keeping the Epstein files locked up than keeping the government open."

Van Hollen further criticized the President's fiscal approach, stating, "Look, the president wants a blank check. This is a lawless president. Hes been illegally withholding funds. He promised on day one he was going to bring down prices. Theyve gone up."

Van Hollen expressed concern over the potential spike in healthcare premiums, attributing the issue to Republican policies. He remarked, "What were saying is that we should turn off this ticking time bomb, which Republicans left in place. Thats going to create a huge spike in health care premiums for about 20 million Americans."

He emphasized the urgency of addressing these concerns, noting, "And until now, the President has said, nope, hed rather shut down the government than prevent those health care costs from spiking. Im glad were finally talking. Well see what happens."

This exchange highlights the ongoing tension between the administration and congressional Democrats, as they navigate the complexities of government funding and healthcare policy.
