In a controversial move that has sparked significant debate, the Des Moines School Board appointed Ian Andre Roberts as Superintendent of Schools in 2023.
This decision granted him one of the most lucrative contracts in Iowa's public education system, with a base salary of $270,000. Such a figure stands in stark contrast to the earnings of many teachers in the state, who often make less than $50,000 annually.
The situation becomes even more contentious when considering Roberts' background. As reported by Gateway Pundit, Roberts was an illegal immigrant with a criminal record at the time of his hiring. Although he initially entered the United States legally, he overstayed his visa and, by May 2024, had received a final deportation order.
Despite this, he continued to oversee the Des Moines Public School District. The school board was aware of a weapons charge Roberts faced in 2020, yet they proceeded with his appointment, seemingly placing political connections above community welfare.
Financially, the arrangement was not only risky but also costly. According to the Des Moines Register, Roberts' contract included more than just his six-figure salary. Taxpayers were responsible for a "tax-sheltered annuity" payment amounting to 14% of his annual salary, nearly $38,000 per year.
Additionally, his compensation package included a $600 monthly car allowance and reimbursements for all in-district travel, pushing his total earnings well beyond $300,000 annually.
The school board defended Roberts by highlighting his academic qualifications, including a claimed Doctorate in Urban Education Leadership from St. Johns University. However, a review of St. Johns website reveals no such degree exists, raising questions about the authenticity of his credentials. This discrepancy suggests either a misleading claim or a deliberate embellishment of his resume during the hiring process for one of the state's most influential educational roles.
Central to this unfolding drama is Jackie Norris, the Board Chair who played a pivotal role in Roberts' appointment. Norris, a seasoned Democrat, previously served as Chief of Staff to First Lady Michelle Obama and has held leadership positions at Goodwill of Central Iowa and Points of Light, a global nonprofit.
Currently, she operates a consulting firm, the Horizon Group. Her political connections and national stature seemingly facilitated Roberts' ascent to the superintendent position, despite the evident concerns.
This situation transcends a mere hiring misstep, highlighting the potential dangers of political favoritism and negligence within local educational systems.
