Mamdani Takes Commanding Double-Digit Lead In NYC Mayoral Race

In the race for New York City's mayoral seat, Democratic socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani has surged ahead with a significant 20-point lead over his nearest rival, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.

This development comes as a recent poll reveals Mamdani's commanding position in the electoral contest.

According to Breitbart, the Suffolk University CityView poll indicates that Mamdani has garnered 45 percent support among New Yorkers who are very or somewhat likely to cast their votes in the upcoming November mayoral election. Cuomo, who stepped down as governor in 2021 amidst a series of scandals and is now running as an independent after losing the primary, trails behind with 25 percent support.

The poll, conducted from September 16 to 18, also shows Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa at nine percent and current Mayor Eric Adams at eight percent.

The survey highlights affordability as the primary concern for voters, with 21 percent identifying it as the top issue in the mayoral race. Crime follows closely at 20 percent, with the economy and jobs at 14 percent, housing at nine percent, and local responses to Trump initiatives at eight percent.

Other issues, such as racism, justice, equality, and education, received less attention, each polling below seven percent.

Suffolk University Political Research Center director David Paleologos noted that their poll is the first to include all seven candidates on the official ballot, along with the nine affiliated political parties or designations. "The official ballot lists Mamdani and Sliwa twice each because they represent multiple political parties or designations," Paleologos explained.

"This helps Mamdani because he is listed first on the ballot as the Democratic Party nominee, and then again fourth on the ballot as the Working Families Party nominee."

Mamdani's campaign has not been without controversy. Just a day before the poll's release, Breitbart News reported that Mamdani had made contentious remarks on Qatari state television, accusing the American federal government of "bankrolling a genocide" against Palestinians. He claimed, without substantiation, that U.S. support has led to the death of "a Palestinian child every hour for over a year."

Furthermore, Mamdani has pledged to divest the city's investments in Israeli bonds and has refrained from denouncing the provocative slogan "globalize the intifada." The Democratic Socialists of America have openly endorsed him as their strongest prospect to "seize state power."

These socialist-leaning statements have raised concerns among Jewish Democratic lawmakers, and Mamdani's campaign events have already faced opposition, notably from hecklers on Staten Island. As the election approaches, the political landscape in New York City remains charged with tension and differing ideologies.
