In a tragic incident that has left a Colorado community in shock, a 16-year-old student opened fire at Evergreen High School, injuring two classmates before taking his own life.
The Jefferson County Sheriffs Office identified the shooter as Desmond Holly, a student at the school located west of Denver. The attack unfolded on Wednesday morning, with Holly using a revolver to fire both inside and outside the school premises.
The two injured students remain in critical condition, as reported by local law enforcement.
According to One America News, the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office has not disclosed the identities of both victims, but one has been confirmed as 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone. Silverstone is currently receiving treatment at CommonSpirit St. Anthonys Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.
His family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of community support and has requested privacy during this difficult time. The school shooting, which occurred on Wednesday, was overshadowed by the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, drawing significant media attention away from the local tragedy.
Following the shooting, Holly turned the gun on himself, resulting in a self-inflicted fatal wound. On Thursday, sheriffs officials disclosed that preliminary evidence points to Holly being "radicalized by some extremist network."
However, they have not specified the group involved or the nature of the radicalization. Investigators are currently examining Holly's phone, home, locker, and other personal items for further insights. "The investigation is still in the early stages," the sheriffs office stated. "At this time, we cannot speak to motive or whether the victims were specifically targeted."
There are still many unanswered questions, particularly regarding how Holly acquired the firearm and ammunition. Authorities have yet to determine if his parents or others might face charges related to the shooting.
In cases where parents of school shooters are charged, it often pertains to the acquisition of the weapon or negligence contributing to the crime. The shooting has deeply unsettled Evergreen, a community known for its tranquil neighborhoods and close-knit schools. In response, counselors and crisis response teams are actively working with students and staff to address their emotional needs.
Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, issued a statement describing the incident as "a heartbreaking act of violence that leaves us with deep questions about safety, extremism, and the vulnerability of our youth." Officials have indicated that the investigation into Hollys motives and potential extremist connections could take several weeks.
Meanwhile, the community is rallying to support the injured students and embarking on a long journey toward healing.
