The California Highway Patrol is set to assume the responsibility of safeguarding Kamala Harris, following the cessation of her Secret Service protection.
Harris, who has been a private citizen since January 19, was granted dignitary status by California officials, thereby entitling her to state-provided security, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.
According to Breitbart, Governor Gavin Newsom's approval is required for the California Highway Patrol to officially provide security for Harris. However, his office has refrained from commenting on the specifics of these arrangements.
"Our office does not comment on security arrangements," stated Izzy Gordon, a spokesperson for Newsom, to The Los Angeles Times.
Harris, residing in Los Angeles, is preparing for an extensive 15-city book tour commencing in New York City on September 24, as noted by USA Today. This tour, spanning 107 days, would have necessitated advance Secret Service planning had her protection continued.
Traditionally, outgoing vice presidents receive Secret Service protection for six months post-tenure. However, President Joe Biden had previously extended Harris' protection beyond this period at the behest of her aides. This extended protection was terminated by President Donald Trump through a memorandum signed on Thursday, effective Monday.
President Trump also concluded Secret Service protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, which had been extended by their father until July. Notably, Hunter Biden recently traveled to South Africa accompanied by his Secret Service detail, as reported by The Washington Post.
Under federal law, only former Presidents and first ladies are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection. The termination of Harris' extended protection marks the end of all such extensions granted by President Trump prior to Biden's inauguration.
