In a spirited address on Ukraine's Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his unwavering resolve to triumph over Moscow in the ongoing conflict that has gripped the nation for over three years.
"Ukraine hasnt won yet, but it will most definitely not lose, Zelenskyy declared, emphasizing the nation's fighting spirit. "Ukraine is not a victim; it is a fighter."
According to American Military News, Zelenskyy's remarks came as Ukraine marked the 34th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian leader acknowledged the current occupation of parts of his country by Russian forces, but remained steadfast in his vision of unity.
"There is one Ukraine, he stated, and we shall be together again as one family.
Zelenskyy's comments also touched on the complex diplomatic relations with Russia, particularly in light of renewed calls from US President Donald Trump for peace negotiations. The Ukrainian President was clear in his rejection of any compromise that would undermine the nation's sovereignty. "[Ukraine] will never again accept the humiliation of what the Russians say is a 'compromise,'" he said. "We need a just peace in which our future will be ours to decide."
This month has seen a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at ending the war, including a high-profile summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Despite both leaders declaring the meeting a success, it has yet to yield any significant breakthroughs or lead to a follow-up summit involving Zelenskyy or other allied leaders.
In a show of solidarity, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Independence Day for his first official visit to Ukraine since his election in April. Carney and Zelenskyy discussed a commitment of 2 billion Canadian dollars ($1.44 billion) for military aid, as well as potential joint defense equipment production initiatives. "We know that Putin can never be trusted, Carney stated during his speech in Kyiv. We know that true peace and security will require security guarantees for Ukraine.
In addition to Canada's support, Norway also pledged to contribute $693 million worth of air defense systems to Ukraine on August 24. The Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv were attended by US envoy Keith Kellogg, who was awarded Ukraines Order of Merit by Zelenskyy. Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson was also honored with the same award at the ceremony.
Trump, who has expressed growing frustration over the lack of a peace deal since the Alaska summit, has threatened to impose further economic sanctions on Russia or withdraw from peace talks altogether. He set a two-week deadline on August 22 for Kyiv and Moscow to progress with the peace process or face potential US retaliation. "I think Ill know the attitude of Russian, and frankly Ukraine, Trump said. Then well make a decision about what were going to do.
The battlefield situation could also influence the progress of peace talks. Russia announced on August 23 that its forces in eastern Ukraine had seized two villages in the Donetsk region and claimed to capture another on August 24. Ukraines military reported that its forces had recaptured a settlement on the western edge of the Dnipropetrovsk region on August 23.
Zelenskyy and European governments continue to call for a cease-fire, a proposition Moscow has resisted. The possibility of Ukraine ceding territory to Russia as part of a peace deal has been suggested by Moscow and Trump.
Zelenskyy has accused the Kremlin of obstructing a meeting with Putin to try to end the war, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Western countries of attempting to "block" peace negotiations. "Theyre just looking for a pretext to block negotiations, Lavrov said in an interview with state TV station Rossiya on August 24.
As Ukraine navigates its new reality on and off the battlefield, the nation remains steadfast in its pursuit of unity and sovereignty. The words of President Zelenskyy echo the unyielding spirit of the Ukrainian people: "We need a just peace in which our future will be ours to decide."
