Rep.
Colin Allred, a Democrat, representing the suburban parts of Dallas, has made it clear that he will announce his intention to run for the Senate as soon as next week. The announcement would mean that Allred would take on sitting Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). Fox News reports that Colin Allred is a former NFL linebacker and voting rights attorney first elected to Congress in 2018. There has been speculation swirling around his possible entrance into the Senate race. He has remained popular with the Democrat caucus in Congress and has served as a member of the leadership team led by Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass.
Politico and the Texas Tribune reported that Allred would enter the race against Cruz. They cited sources close to the Congressman who would be familiar with his plans to enter the race.
Inside Elections reporter Jacob Rubashkin reported last week that Allreds website already has a new design. This redesign fueled the speculation that he might run for the Senate seat. As it turns out, it seems that Rubashkin was correct in his assumption that Allred was gearing up to make a run for the Senate seat.
Fox News reached out to a spokesperson for Allred, but they did not immediately get back for comment on the story.
Allred running for the Senate seat could make for an exciting race between a rising star in the Democrat Party and former NFL player against Ted Cruz, a sturdy conservative Senator. Cruz has become a household name as he ran for President in 2016 and has made a name for himself in the Senate. However, Democrats see a potential opening in a state that has slowly become more Democrat in the last few election cycles.
Fox News reports no Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994, but Beto ORourke came within 3 percentage points of knocking off Ted Cruz in 2018. Cruz is up for re-election in 2024, and Democrats are eager to take another shot at him.
Allred won his seat in 2018 in an upset victory over Rep. Pete Sessions, a former House Rules Committee and National Republican Congressional Committee chairman. He has since won re-election twice after his District was redrawn in 2020 and turned into a safe Democrat seat. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Allred is as popular with the entire state of Texas as some Democrats believe he is.
