In a significant political development, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas has thrown his weight behind Representative Chip Roy in the latter's bid for the position of Texas Attorney General.
Cruz, who has long been associated with Roy, lauded him as a "battle-tested warrior" and a "fierce defender of the Constitution," underscoring their shared conservative values and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
"There are several excellent candidates right now in the race for Texas Attorney General. All of them are friends of mine, and all of them have been strong supporters of mine for many, many years. Texas is blessed to have an abundance of strong conservatives stepping forward to lead, in such a time as this," Cruz stated, emphasizing the wealth of conservative talent in the state.
According to Breitbart, Cruz expressed his pride in endorsing Roy, highlighting their long-standing alliance and shared battles for conservative principles. "I am proud to endorse Chip Roy for Attorney General of Texas. As my very first chief of staff, Chip has been a close friend and ally of mine for over 12 years. We have been in more fights together than I can count, and I know Chip will always, always, always fight for conservative values," Cruz continued.
Roy's campaign announcement comes as the seat for Texas Attorney General is set to open in 2026, following current Attorney General Ken Paxton's decision to pursue a U.S. Senate seat, challenging Senator John Cornyn. Roy, who has represented Texas's 21st Congressional District for four terms, has pledged to uphold the state's "legacy of liberty and security."
His campaign will focus on critical issues such as border security, support for law enforcement, election integrity, and curbing foreign influence over Texas land and assets. Roy's decision to run is driven by a desire to "come home" after his tenure in Washington.
"It has been my honor to represent the 21st Congressional District of Texas the best part of the best state in the greatest country in the history of the world. But representatives should not be permanent," Roy remarked, signaling his commitment to serving Texas at the state level. His extensive career includes roles as a federal prosecutor, First Assistant Attorney General under Paxton, Chief of Staff to Cruz, Senior Counsel to Governor Rick Perry, and staff director for the Senate Judiciary Committee under Cornyn.
In Congress, Roy has been active on the Rules, Budget, and Judiciary Committees, chaired the Subcommittee on the Constitution, and is a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
The race for Texas Attorney General is shaping up to be a competitive one, with other Republican contenders including state Senators Mayes Middleton and Joan Huffman, as well as Aaron Reitz, a former Trump administration official and Paxton aide. As the campaign unfolds, the focus will likely remain on key conservative issues that resonate with Texas voters, particularly in areas concerning state sovereignty and individual freedoms.
Roy's candidacy, bolstered by Cruz's endorsement, positions him as a formidable contender in the race to lead the Office of the Texas Attorney General.
