Zohran Mamdani faced a moment of public embarrassment at Brooklyn's Mens Day open streets event on Saturday when he struggled to complete a solo bench press.
At 33, Mamdani required full assistance from a spotter to manage two repetitions of a 135-pound lift, as captured in a video shared on X. The footage shows Mamdani receiving encouragement from the crowd, with one member humorously suggesting, this is how you move up in the polls.
According to the Daily Caller, Mamdani appeared visibly disappointed with his performance, acknowledging the spotter's crucial role in his attempt. Despite this setback, Mamdani engaged with the community by walking along Eastern Parkway during the Open Streets event, capturing numerous selfies with New Yorkers near the Brooklyn Museum, as reported by the New York Post.
The outlet noted that Mamdani compensated for his lackluster bench press by showcasing his soccer skills, a nod to the sport's popularity in his birthplace of Uganda, where he recently celebrated a lavish wedding in July.
Concluding the day's activities, Mamdani addressed the attendees, expressing gratitude and ambition. It is such a pleasure to be here, and I want to say thank you to the organizers for celebrating what makes this community beautiful, he stated. I look forward to being your next mayor, next year.
