As the diplomatic dance between Russia and Ukraine continues, President Trump has made a startling revelation.
During an interview on FOX & Friends, he disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not been in contact with the White House for years, and has also refrained from engaging with European leaders.
This comes at a time when the world is on the cusp of a historic peace agreement, brokered by President Trump, who has been instrumental in facilitating numerous such deals since his return to the presidency.
According to Gateway Pundit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has confirmed that President Putin has officially extended an invitation to President Trump to visit Moscow. As reported by RT.com, Lavrov stated that Trump "has an invitation" and found the idea "interesting."
During an interview with Rossiya 24, Lavrov reiterated that Trump had expressed interest in visiting Russia during their summit. However, Trump also acknowledged that he might face some backlash for his trip to Moscow, but he could "see it possibly happening."
In a recent meeting with European leaders and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky, President Trump abruptly excused himself to make a phone call to the Russian President. This unexpected move came on the heels of a revelation reported by The Gateway Pundit, where President Trump announced that Putin had offered security guarantees for Ukraine and that "European nations are going to take a lot of the burden."
Both Presidents have indicated that Ukraine will need to relinquish some of the territories currently under occupation to reach a peace agreement. This would include the Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk, which is presently under Russian control. In 2022, the Kremlin declared the annexation of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
Dan Scavino, White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Assistant to the President, recently posted a black and white photo of President Trump with Volodymyr Zelensky in front of a map depicting the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The map clearly shows the extent of Russian occupation across various regions of Ukraine, with the Donbas region being predominantly under Russian control.
The Crimea peninsula, home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, voted for Russian annexation in March 2014 following the Maiden Revolution in Kyiv. This revolution led to the overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the subsequent election of Petro Poroshenko, who was more favorable to the West. Despite Ukraine's claims that the annexation of Crimea is illegitimate, a Gallup poll conducted in April 2014 revealed that 74% of Crimeans believed that becoming part of Russia would improve their lives.
Voice of America reported in 2014 that the majority of Crimeans were content with being part of Russia, with nearly three-quarters of those surveyed expressing that their lives would improve as part of Russia rather than Ukraine. Five years later, Russia's Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) supported these initial findings by Gallup, with 72% of Crimeans stating that "Crimea's reunification with Russia has had positive impacts on their lives and their families."
However, Freedom House, a non-governmental organization funded by the U.S. State Department and USAID, maintains that Crimea is "Not Free" and awarded it a score of 8/100 in a 2019 study. This stark contrast between the sentiments of the Crimean people and the assessment by Freedom House raises questions about the legitimacy of such evaluations and the true state of affairs in the region.
