The Democratic party has been in a state of uproar following President Donald Trump's decision to assume control of law enforcement in Washington, D.C.
High-ranking Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), have attempted to downplay the city's crime rate. Meanwhile, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has dismissed the situation as non-emergency, and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) has controversially suggested that Trump is responsible for a murder that occurred the day after the President announced his intervention.
Some have suggested that the President has set a trap for Democrats, forcing them to defend the city's crime rate.
However, the Democratic narrative is failing to convince the public, who are acutely aware of the city's crime problem. A recent leftist protest in D.C., centered around this issue, attracted a disappointingly low turnout. Residents of the area are all too familiar with the reality of crime in their city.
So, how has the situation evolved since President Trump's intervention? The President has previously demonstrated his ability to address the border issue, but has he been successful in tackling D.C.'s crime problem?
According to the Daily Caller, a White House official has provided an update on the President's D.C. crackdown. Since the operation began 11 days ago, there have been over 380 arrests. In total, 59 firearms have been seized, and over 160 illegal aliens, including known gang members and individuals charged with assault, kidnapping, burglary, larceny, commercialized sexual offenses, and drug smuggling, have been arrested. Last night alone, 22 multi-agency teams were deployed across all seven districts in D.C., with over 1,950 participants involved in the operations.
This surge in law enforcement activity in such a short time frame is likely to have a significant impact on the city's crime rate. The increased police presence is expected to deter potential criminals.
But how does this compare to the situation prior to President Trump's intervention? According to RedState, the D.C. Police Union has provided some insight. Since the announcement of federal control, robbery rates have dropped by 46%, carjacking by 83%, violent crime by 22%, car theft by 21%, assault with a deadly weapon by 6%, property crime by 6%, and overall crime by 8%.
While these statistics are promising, they need to be assessed over a longer period to provide a more accurate picture. However, they certainly suggest a positive start.
The D.C. Police Union has expressed support for President Trump's intervention. They believe that crime in the city has reached crisis levels and that the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act, which they believe has hampered their efforts, needs to be repealed. The Union's support for the President's intervention underscores the need for a leader willing to take decisive action to address the city's crime problem.
As Rep. Swalwell stated last week, Trump owns this. And if the early results of the President's intervention are any indication, this ownership may well be a point of pride. The President's decisive action appears to be having a positive impact on the city's crime rate, demonstrating that a strong law enforcement presence can deter criminals and protect innocent citizens.
