Denzel Washington, the acclaimed actor and two-time Academy Award winner, has recently made waves by taking a firm stand against the pervasive cancel culture.
In a candid conversation with Jillian Hardeman-Webb of Complex, Washington expressed his disregard for the fear of offending others and the potential backlash from social media's most vocal critics. The actor was promoting his latest film, "Highest 2 Lowest," directed by Spike Lee, when the discussion took place.
According to the Western Journal, Hardeman-Webb questioned Washington about his perspective on individuals losing their careers and income due to offending others or challenging prevailing norms, a phenomenon commonly referred to as being "canceled."
Washington responded with a question of his own, "What does that mean, to be canceled?" When Hardeman-Webb explained that it meant losing public support, Washington retorted, "Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?"
In the current era, Hardeman-Webb pointed out, social media followers have become a form of currency. However, Washington was quick to dismiss this notion. "I dont care whos following who. Okay? You cant lead and follow at the same time, and you cant follow and lead at the same time. I dont follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I dont follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it aint working out so well," he asserted.
The actor went on to offer some advice, stating, "You cant be canceled if you havent signed up. Dont sign up." He then humorously warned Lee not to get him started on the topic, indicating his strong feelings about it.
In a previous interview on Jake Hamiltons show "Jakes Takes," Washington had expressed similar sentiments. When asked about awards, he stated, "I dont do it for Oscars. I really dont care about that kind of stuff. Ive been at this a long time. Theres times when I won and shouldnt have won, and shouldnt have won and won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward."
Washington, a devout Christian, has consistently emphasized the role of faith in guiding his decisions. He embodies the biblical teachings of not conforming to worldly standards but living by God's standards.
His latest film, "Highest 2 Lowest," which was released recently, tells the story of a music mogul, portrayed by Washington, who is faced with a life-altering moral decision when his son becomes the target of a kidnapping plot.
Washington's stance against cancel culture and his emphasis on faith over worldly recognition are a testament to his commitment to traditional values and individual freedom. His views offer a refreshing perspective in an industry often seen as hostile towards faith and conservative viewpoints.
His successful career, despite not conforming to the prevailing norms, serves as a powerful example of the potential rewards of staying true to one's beliefs and principles.
