In a recent interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China would not invade Taiwan during his presidency.
This revelation comes at a time when global attention is focused on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, drawing parallels between the two situations.
According to Fox News, Trump stated, "You know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don't believe there's any way it's going to happen as long as I'm here. We'll see." He further quoted Xi as saying, "I will never do it as long as you're president."
Trump expressed his appreciation for Xi's assurance, but also noted the Chinese leader's patience, quoting him as saying, "But I am very patient, and China is very patient."
The first confirmed call between Trump and Xi during Trump's second term took place in June, although Trump also mentioned a call in April without specifying the date. China's stance on Taiwan is clear: it views the island as part of its territory and has pledged to "reunify" with it, using force if necessary. Taiwan, a democratic and independently governed island, vehemently rejects China's sovereignty claims.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington underscored the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue in China-U.S. relations on Friday. Liu Pengyu, the embassy spokesperson, urged the U.S. government to adhere to the one-China principle and the three U.S.-China joint communiqus, handle Taiwan-related issues prudently, and earnestly safeguard China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Despite the U.S. being Taiwan's primary arms supplier and international supporter, it, like most countries, does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with the island. In response to Trump's comments, Wang Ting-yu, a senior lawmaker from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, expressed gratitude for support from their "major ally."
However, he emphasized the importance of self-reliance in matters of security, stating, "Security cannot rely on the enemy's promise, nor can it rely solely on the help from friends. Strengthening our own defense capability is fundamental!"
The Taiwanese government has yet to officially respond to Trump's remarks. The situation underscores the delicate balance of power in the region and the potential for conflict should China decide to act on its claims over Taiwan. The U.S., while supportive of Taiwan, must tread carefully to avoid escalating tensions.
The statements from Trump and Xi offer a glimpse into the high-stakes diplomacy at play, highlighting the importance of patience, prudence, and the pursuit of peace in managing international relations.
The conservative perspective would emphasize the importance of maintaining strong defense capabilities and the principle of self-reliance, as echoed by Wang Ting-yu. It would also underscore the need for a limited government role in international affairs, focusing instead on fostering individual freedom and free-market economics.
This perspective aligns with the traditional values that underpin conservative viewpoints, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability while respecting the sovereignty of nations.
