Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley criticized Vice President Kamala Harris in an opinion piece published by Fox News on Monday, labeling her as one of the "most incompetent elected officials" in the nation.
While questioning President Joe Biden's mental capacity, Haley argued that Harris's failures in foreign policy and border management are extensive.
Haley wrote, "This uncertainly about Biden's mental competence means Americans must consider the actual competency of the vice president. Kamala Harris is one of the most incompetent elected officials in the country. Her failures in foreign policy and managing the border are too numerous to mention to say nothing of the word salad that defines her unscripted remarks."
The former South Carolina governor further emphasized the importance of considering Harris's competence, given Biden's age and the possibility of her serving as President.
As the 2024 election approaches, Haley believes voters must decide whether they would be content with Harris potentially occupying the presidential role, even though she is the vice presidential candidate on the ticket.
In her opinion piece, Haley reiterated her proposal that politicians over 75 should undergo mental competency tests and disclose the results to the public. She mentioned the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test as a practical examination for senior politicians while clarifying that taking the test should be an obligation but not a qualification for office.
Haley stated, "This is not a qualification for office. Failing a mental competency test would not result in removal. It is about transparency. Voters deserve to know whether those who are making major decisions about war and peace, taxation and budgets, schools and safety, can pass a very basic mental exam."
The former ambassador to the United Nations used Biden and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) as examples to justify her call for competency tests for politicians over 75.
Feinstein, 89, has been absent from the Senate since February following a hospitalization due to Shingles. Although she has been released from the hospital, Feinstein has not provided a clear timeline for her return to the Senate, prompting some Democrats to call for her resignation.
Haley has advocated for mental competency tests for politicians above 75 since announcing her presidential campaign in February. Among the declared candidates, Biden, 80, and former President Donald Trump, 76, would fall within the age range requiring an examination.
