Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a warm welcome at 10 Downing Street on Thursday, where he met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The meeting was marked by a display of camaraderie, with hugs and handshakes exchanged between the two leaders. This gathering occurred just a day before a pivotal meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin at an air base in Alaska.
According to Breitbart, the Trump-Putin meeting is significant as it marks the first occasion the Russian leader has been allowed on Western soil since his 2022 invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives. The BBC noted that Zelensky and Starmer were expected to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and explore potential resolutions.
However, neither Zelensky nor Starmer will participate in the Alaska talks, as Europe remains on the periphery of these discussions.
President Trump engaged in a strategic dialogue with European leaders, including Zelensky, Starmer, Frances Emmanuel Macron, Germanys Friedrich Merz, NATOs Mark Rutte, and the European Unions Ursula Von Der Leyen. This hour-long call aimed to align efforts and strategies concerning the conflict in Ukraine.
European leaders have already outlined their prerequisites for any peace progress, expressing disappointment that the negotiations are taking place in Alaska rather than on European soil.
Recent polling indicates a shift in sentiment among Ukrainians, with a majority now favoring negotiations to end the war promptly. This marks a stark contrast to the prevailing attitude in 2022 when the conflict was still fresh, and the majority advocated for continued fighting until victory was achieved.
