Adams Defends Benefits For Migrants: Says They Deserve Help Because They're 'Innocent'

During a recent appearance on Fox 5 New York's "Good Day New York," Mayor Eric Adams of New York City addressed the contentious issue of the city's sanctuary policy, which has become the subject of a federal lawsuit.

Adams advocated for a nuanced approach, suggesting that the law should be revised to facilitate better collaboration with federal authorities in dealing with violent offenders. However, he emphasized that undocumented individuals who are law-abiding and striving for the American Dream should not be penalized by being denied taxpayer-funded benefits. "We should not be harming them at all," he asserted, describing these individuals as "innocent people who are just trying to pursue the American Dream."

As reported by Breitbart, Adams elaborated on the concept of a sanctuary city, stating, "when people use the term of sanctuary city, what were saying is that you have the right with your tax dollars to get the resources you deserve." This perspective underscores a commitment to ensuring that all residents, regardless of their immigration status, have access to essential services funded by their contributions.

The conversation also touched upon the recent shooting of an off-duty Border Patrol agent, prompting Adams to reiterate his call for legal modifications. He argued that in cases involving violent acts, particularly by repeat offenders, there should be a mechanism for local authorities to work in tandem with federal agencies.

"I called for a modification in our existing laws, because if someone commits a violent act like that, and these guys were repeated offenders, we should be able to coordinate with the federal authorities to address those situations," Adams stated.

His comments reflect a desire to balance public safety with the protection of law-abiding illegal immigrants, highlighting the complexities of immigration policy in a sanctuary city.
