San Francisco is one of a few places to boycott conservative states due to legislation on social issues.
However, the city quickly discovered that the boycott hurt San Francisco more than the red states it was going up against.
According to a Breitbart report in February, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors decided to reconsider an ordinance passed in 2016 that banned city-funded travel to states that had passed laws like transgender bathroom ordinances. The ordinance also banned contracting with companies headquartered in those states. The boycott eventually expanded to include states that passed voter integrity laws and abortion restrictions.
It began with states that restricted LGBT rights. Then, the boycott expanded to include any states that they determined restricted voting rights or abortions.
First, the boycott did nothing to stop conservative states from making laws. Then, it raised contracting costs by 10-20%. Now, the city has agreed to exclude contracting costs from the boycott. However, the mayor already supports repealing the law. According to Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, the government is now less efficient because of the boycott.
California has also established a boycott. However, the state is rethinking its ban on state-funded travel to red states. Sources quickly point out that Governor Newsom has vacationed in these states or gone to them to campaign against their laws. However, facing a possible repeal has become quite a headache. The boycott from California includes 23 states.
Breitbart states, In March, Toni Atkins, one of the states most powerful officials as leader of the California State Senate, announced that she was proposing repealing the states travel ban. Ms. Atkins supported the boycott in 2016 but said its attendant headaches outweighed its benefits.
If repealed, the state may consider funding ads that support the LGBT community.
