In a revealing segment on CNN's "AC360," Hot Springs, North Carolina Mayor Abby Norton shared her perspective on federal disaster relief efforts, contrasting the approaches of the Trump and Biden administrations.
During the interview with CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, Norton expressed her belief that the federal response under President Trump was more effective in aiding her city compared to the current administration. However, she emphasized the need for reform within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), cautioning against its elimination.
According to Breitbart, King highlighted the ongoing challenges in Hot Springs, noting that "most of downtown is still a mess," with Mayor Norton estimating the rebuilding progress at merely 40%. In a candid moment, Norton remarked, "What I thought Washington would do would be to immediately come in and either fix everything or supply the funds for us to fix everything. But thats not how it works." This sentiment underscores the complexity and delays often associated with federal disaster relief processes.
Mayor Norton, who voted third party in the presidential election shortly after a devastating flood, was asked by King about any discernible differences between the Trump and Biden administrations in handling disaster relief. She responded, "First of all, Im not a politician. I never have been. But it has been better under the Trump administration than it was under Biden, my opinion." Norton elaborated that the federal government was "more responsive" under Trump, stating, "Things are getting done faster. They are more responsive. Were getting a lot more help than we did."
Despite acknowledging improvements under Trump, Norton pointed out that federal assistance still takes too long, particularly in rebuilding essential infrastructure like town offices. She expressed concern over proposed changes to FEMA, stating, "FEMA doesnt need to be eliminated. It just the processes need to be easier, more user-friendly. No, I dont think it needs to be eliminated at all." When asked about shifting responsibilities to the states, Norton firmly replied, "No."
Mayor Norton's insights reflect a broader debate on the efficiency and effectiveness of federal disaster relief efforts. Her comments highlight the need for streamlined processes within FEMA to ensure timely and adequate support for communities in crisis, while also acknowledging the successes of past administrations in addressing such challenges.
