Dem Rep Says Hes Got A 'Good Feeling' About Newsom For President

During a recent event hosted by South Carolina's Democratic Party, Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina expressed optimism about California Governor Gavin Newsom's potential presidential run in 2028.

Clyburn, who once held the distinction of being the highest-ranking black member of Congress, referred to Newsom as one of the "candidates that are running for President." This statement has fueled speculation that Newsom is preparing to enter the race for the White House.

According to Politico, Clyburn remarked, "Its no secret. I feel good about his [Newsoms] chances." Clyburn's endorsement carries significant weight within the Democratic Party, as he is often seen as a "kingmaker." His support for Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 South Carolina Democratic presidential primary was pivotal in Biden's eventual nomination and election.

As reported by the Daily Caller, Newsom recently embarked on a two-day tour of rural South Carolina counties, an event hosted by the state's Democratic Party. During this tour, he acknowledged that he "could have done a bit extra" to support former Vice President Kamala Harris in her unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign. Clyburn, who has previously referred to Harris as "my girl," did not indicate whether he would back her in any future political endeavors.

Newsom, however, remained non-committal about supporting Harris should she decide to run for President again in 2028 or pursue the California governorship in 2026. "Lets figure out which," Newsom stated, adding, "Well see what decisions she makes." Harris is reportedly contemplating a gubernatorial bid in California or another presidential run, though some Democrats have expressed reservations about her potential candidacy for governor.

The offices of both Clyburn and Newsom did not provide immediate responses to inquiries from the Daily Caller News Foundation. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Democratic Party faces critical decisions regarding its leadership and direction, with figures like Newsom and Harris at the forefront of these discussions.
