Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia, is preparing to introduce legislation that mandates a new census exclusively counting U.S. citizens.
This initiative aims to influence the allocation of House seats among the states. The proposed legislation, still in its drafting phase, also seeks to enforce proof of American citizenship for participation in federal elections, as Greene revealed to Fox News Digital.
According to Fox News, Greene has discussed her proposal with President Donald Trump, who has expressed his support. When questioned about the initiative, the President remarked, "I love it." Greene frames the issue as a "matter of national security," criticizing Democrats for allegedly wanting non-citizens to vote and advocating for amnesty, which she claims could lead to a "world takeover" of the United States.
Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau includes unauthorized immigrants in the population counts used to determine the distribution of House seats. The process of apportionment, as outlined by census.gov, involves dividing the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives among the 50 states based on these population counts.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution specifies that "Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed."
Should the census count only citizens, it could significantly alter the political landscape of the nation. Some states might lose House seats, while others could gain, affecting the distribution of Electoral College votes, which are determined by the total number of congressional seats each state holds.
This shift could have profound implications for future presidential elections, underscoring the importance of this legislative proposal.
