Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has broken his silence to express discontent with President Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," which is currently navigating its way through Congress.
Musk's dissatisfaction stems from a significant modification made to the bill late Friday night, which he believes could have far-reaching consequences.
According to Gateway Pundit, the Senate GOP unveiled the revised text of the 940-page reconciliation bill shortly after midnight, incorporating changes to the previous draft. This legislation seeks to cement several pivotal policies, such as making the Trump tax cuts permanent, eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, fortifying the border, and dismantling what is perceived as President Joe Biden's green energy initiatives.
A notable amendment in the draft pertains to the treatment of credits for the wind and solar industries.
Initially, the Senate had relaxed the House's stringent restrictions on energy subsidies. Specifically, the House had mandated that projects must commence within 60 days of the bill's signing and be operational by the end of 2028 to qualify for essential energy tax credits.
However, the revised legislation stipulates that these credits will only apply to facilities that begin generating electricity before the close of 2027. Additionally, it introduces a tax on certain wind and solar projects that come into service post-2027.
These revisions follow President Trump's successful lobbying of Senate Majority Leader John Thune to curtail what he views as wasteful and economically detrimental energy sources, marking a significant victory for conservative principles.
Should the bill remain unchanged, it could potentially result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs and the termination of numerous projects currently underway.
Musk, visibly frustrated by this substantial alteration, voiced his concerns that terminating these subsidies would "destroy millions of jobs" and criticized the Senators for their regressive approach. "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country!" Musk declared. He further described the bill as "utterly insane and destructive," arguing that it favors outdated industries while inflicting severe damage on emerging sectors.
Musk also highlighted a poll indicating that a significant majority of the public opposes Trump's hallmark economic legislation, labeling it as "political suicide for the Republican Party."
However, from a conservative standpoint, abandoning the "Big Beautiful Bill" could indeed spell political disaster for the GOP. Failing to deliver on promises and undermining the party's leadership could alienate the MAGA base and disillusion voters who expect the GOP to uphold its commitments.
In the end, the GOP faces a critical decision: whether to heed Musk's warnings or to stand firm in support of a bill that aligns with conservative values and the agenda set forth by President Trump. The outcome of this legislative battle will undoubtedly have lasting implications for the party's future and its relationship with its constituents.
