In what would typically be an unremarkable local Republican primary, the race for township supervisor in Smithtown, Long Island, New York, has captured national attention due to an unusual series of events.
On Tuesday, the electorate decided to retain Edward Wehrheim as their supervisor, as reported by News 12 Long Island. Wehrheim secured victory over his rival, John Trotta, with 55 percent of the vote, surpassing Trotta by approximately 700 votes.
The election, however, was overshadowed by allegations of misconduct involving a man linked to Wehrheim's family. According to the New York Post, Joshua Smith, who is dating Wehrheim's daughter, Kellie Ann, was arrested on the eve of the election. Smith, 47, faces charges of stalking and menacing Trotta.
The Post detailed that Smith allegedly engaged in a series of intimidating actions, including pulling into Trotta's driveway late at night, with headlights glaring and engine roaring, over three consecutive nights starting June 16.
Trotta recounted to the Post, "One night Im in bed and all of a sudden I hear this loud revving, almost like thunder. I go to the window, and I can barely see anything until they drove away."
Initially, Wehrheim's campaign denied any involvement in these incidents. However, following Smith's arrest, the campaign's stance shifted. "Right now were focusing on getting through the election today," a campaign representative stated on Tuesday morning. "After that, the Supervisor and I plan on getting to the bottom of this entire situation. No one wants to get to the truth in this matter more than him."
Trotta remains skeptical of Wehrheim's disavowal. "It boggles my mind how [Wehrheim] can sit there and call this an allegation and try to ignore it when the police set up a plate reader and caught him at his house," Trotta remarked.
In light of these developments, Wehrheim's campaign sought to distance itself from Smith. "Anyone who has ever worked with, or has met Ed Wehrheim knows that he is a man who treats everyone with dignity and respect and lives every day to serve his community," a campaign representative asserted. "He would never condone or tolerate any sort of behavior that defies basic decency."
Despite the controversy, Wehrheim emerged victorious in the primary, reinforcing his pursuit of a position he has held for seven years. This incident underscores the unpredictable nature of local politics, where personal relationships and unexpected events can significantly impact the political landscape.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind the allegations and ensuring accountability.
