In a striking turn of events, a Washington man found himself facing the consequences of his online threats when he was arrested and confronted by the very sheriff he allegedly threatened.
Matthew Moulton, 45, of Walla Walla, Washington, was taken into custody after sending a menacing email to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, declaring, "Im going to have to threaten you with death. Its coming. Theres nothing you can do to stop it." This incident underscores the importance of personal responsibility and the potential repercussions of reckless behavior online.
As reported by Western Journal, the arrest unfolded after Moulton's email, sent on March 20, prompted law enforcement to investigate. Despite Moulton's claims that his threats were "satirical and artistic" and protected under the First Amendment, authorities found sufficient grounds to charge him with a felony for making written or electronic threats to kill or cause bodily harm. A warrant for his arrest was issued on March 31, and Florida officials apprehended him on May 21.
Upon his arrival in Florida, Moulton was met by Sheriff Chitwood himself, who greeted him with a dose of reality. "Matthew, Im Sheriff Chitwood. Im the guy you want to kill, and theres nothing I can do about it," Chitwood stated, leaving Moulton visibly taken aback. The sheriff continued, "Challenge accepted," as Moulton attempted to downplay his actions by claiming he had sent a "sermon."
Sheriff Chitwood, however, was quick to remind Moulton of the seriousness of his actions, explaining, "But, you do know in Florida, a written threat to kill is a felony." He further added, "Just so you know, Im the one who made sure you came back, and I hope you enjoy your stay." Chitwood also informed Moulton that he would not be seeing Mickey Mouse during his visit and would be responsible for reimbursing the costs of his flight and stay at the county jail.
In a bizarre exchange, Moulton attempted to justify his actions by declaring, "I am a Christian," to which Chitwood responded, "So am I." Moulton then cited 1 Corinthians, arguing, "Because in Corinthians it says bondsmen are not Christian!" This peculiar defense did little to mitigate the gravity of his alleged crime.
According to an affidavit cited by WFLA-TV, Moulton's email was sent in response to Sheriff Chitwood's 2024 initiative to publicize mugshots and perp walks for students who falsely reported school shootings. This initiative, aimed at deterring false threats, appears to have struck a nerve with Moulton.
The incident serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of making threats online, as Moulton's bravado behind a computer screen quickly dissipated when faced with the real-world consequences of his actions.
Sheriff Chitwood's direct confrontation with Moulton highlights the importance of accountability and the rule of law, principles that are foundational to a society that values individual freedom and responsibility.
