In a significant political development, Democratic South Carolina Representative James Clyburn, who was instrumental in bolstering former President Joe Biden's campaign during the 2020 Democratic primaries, has publicly endorsed former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for the position of New York City mayor.

Clyburn, once the highest-ranking black member of Congress, expressed his support for Cuomo in a statement, emphasizing his belief in Cuomo's potential to significantly influence the future of the National Democratic Party.

According to the Daily Caller, Clyburn's statement read, I am proud to join the endorsers of Andrew Cuomo for Mayor of New York City. He further elaborated on his long-standing relationship with Cuomo, dating back to the latter's tenure as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton administration. Clyburn highlighted their shared commitment to fighting for underserved communities, particularly communities of color. He praised Cuomo's leadership as Governor of New York, citing his ability to effect real progress and achieve lasting results.

Clyburn, often referred to as a kingmaker in political circles, played a pivotal role in Biden's victory in the 2020 South Carolina Democratic presidential primary. His endorsement was a key factor in Biden's subsequent win of the Democratic presidential nomination.

In his endorsement of Cuomo, Clyburn emphasized the former governor's proactive approach to problem-solving and coalition-building. Andrew does not just go along to get along. He searches for solutions and builds coalitions to reach common ground, Clyburn stated. He expressed confidence in Cuomo's ability to deliver on his promises, including building more affordable housing, raising the minimum wage, enhancing city safety, and creating more opportunities for youth.

Clyburn also underscored the strategic importance of the New York mayor's role in the National Democratic Party's future, particularly in the face of challenges posed by the Trump administration. He asserted that the mayor of New York must be prepared to defend the city's autonomy.

In a further show of support, Clyburn stated his belief that Cuomo possesses the necessary experience, credentials, and character to not only serve New York but also to contribute significantly to the nation's wellbeing. He [Cuomo] has my wholehearted support, and I urge my fellow Democrats to vote for him and do so enthusiastically, Clyburn stated.

In contrast, the New York Times editorial board recently discouraged voters from supporting far-left Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor. The board cited Mamdani's political agenda as being uniquely unsuited to the city's challenges. Reports suggest that Mamdani could struggle to win over black voters in the mayoral race.

The editorial board acknowledged Cuomo's significant shortcomings but also recognized his strong policy record among the mayoral candidates.
