Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Governor of California and a legal immigrant from Austria, recently stirred a lively debate during his appearance on "The View."
His remarks, urging immigrants to "behave like a guest," sparked a range of reactions from the show's liberal hosts. Schwarzenegger emphasized the importance of legal immigration, stating, "I just think the world of the great history that we have with immigrants in America, but the key thing also is at the same time, that weve got to do things legal."
According to One America News, Schwarzenegger elaborated on his stance by comparing immigrants to guests in a host country. He asserted that immigrants should respect their new home by adhering to the law and contributing positively to society. "When you come to America, youre a guest, and you have to behave like a guest," he explained.
He further encouraged immigrants to give back to their communities, suggesting involvement in programs like after-school initiatives and the Special Olympics.
The conversation took a contentious turn when co-host Whoopi Goldberg countered Schwarzenegger's perspective, arguing that "90% of the people who come here are trying to do the right thing." Sunny Hostin, another co-host, added that "immigrants are less likely to commit crimes in this country than actual American-born citizens."
These comments reflect a broader liberal narrative that often highlights the positive contributions of immigrants and downplays concerns about illegal immigration.
Schwarzenegger, however, pointed to the lack of comprehensive immigration reform as a root cause of the ongoing debate. He called for bipartisan cooperation, stating, "Democrats and Republicans have to come together and solve this issue if they really want to be public servants."
His remarks underscore a conservative viewpoint that emphasizes the need for legal immigration and the responsibility of immigrants to integrate and contribute to American society.
