In a recent House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee meeting, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz found himself under intense scrutiny from Representative Tom Emmer.
The Republican congressman lambasted Walz for his sanctuary policies, accusing him of failing to uphold national sovereignty and, more crucially, failing the people of Minnesota. According to The Post Millennial, Emmer's criticism centered on Walz's approach to illegal immigrants, which he argued was overly generous and detrimental to the state's law-abiding citizens.
Emmer highlighted the measures Walz has implemented to bolster protections for illegal immigrants, including state-funded healthcare and college tuition, as well as the provision of drivers licenses. He challenged Walz's denial of Minnesota being a sanctuary state, stating, "So you claim youre not a sanctuary state. You just provide free healthcare, free college, and drivers licenses to illegal aliens."
The congressman further criticized Walz for his refusal to cooperate with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), contrasting Minnesota's stance with states like Florida and Virginia that empower their law enforcement to detain and remove criminal illegal aliens. Emmer questioned Walz's agreement with the state's Attorney General's guidance to law enforcement to disregard ICE Immigration detainers.
In response to these allegations, Walz maintained that Minnesota "follows all law." However, Emmer countered this claim by pointing out that Walz's support for policies that hinder ICE from performing their duties contradicts his denial of Minnesota being a sanctuary state.
Emmer also brought up Walz's past statements, including a social media post from May 2018 where Walz expressed support for policies that prevent law enforcement from enforcing federal laws. He also referenced a speech Walz gave at the University of Minnesota Law Schools graduation ceremony in May 2025, where he likened Donald Trumps immigration enforcement to a "modern day Gestapo."
Emmer condemned Walz's comparison of ICE agents to the Gestapo, the secret police of Hitler's Nazi Germany, especially in light of recent attacks on ICE agents in Los Angeles. He accused Walz of using dangerous, inflammatory rhetoric that puts a target on the back of every ICE agent risking their life to protect communities.
The congressman also criticized Walz's handling of the chaos and violence that erupted following George Floyds death, particularly his refusal to deploy the National Guard. Emmer argued that Walz's policies, which he perceives as favoring illegal immigrants over law-abiding citizens, are indicative of a sanctuary state.
Emmer concluded his critique by accusing Walz of turning Minnesota "into a magnet for illegals," thereby exposing communities to dangerous criminals, including known terrorists, gang members, murderers, and child predators.
He claimed that Walz's policies send a message that the safety and well-being of Minnesota's law-abiding citizens are not his priorities. Instead, illegal immigrants are not only welcomed but also entitled to benefits at the taxpayers' expense.
Emmer ended his remarks by calling Walz's sanctuary state agenda a complete failure, accusing him of failing to enforce the rule of law, uphold national sovereignty, and serve the people of Minnesota.
He asserted that the era of radical sanctuary state policy is over, as evidenced by the election of President Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the previous November elections.
