In a recent dialogue with the New York Post, President Donald Trump expressed growing skepticism about the prospects of reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran.
The former commander-in-chief, who has long advocated for a resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue, conveyed his diminishing optimism regarding the potential for a successful deal.
According to Breitbart, President Trump, in a conversation with journalist Miranda Devine, remarked, "I dont know," when questioned about the likelihood of persuading Iran to dismantle its nuclear ambitions. He elaborated, "I did think so, and Im getting more and more less confident about it."
The President attributed this shift in confidence to perceived delays by the Iranian regime, stating, "They seem to be delaying, and I think thats a shame, but Im less confident now than I would have been a couple of months ago. Something happened to them, but I am much less confident of a deal being made."
Throughout his tenure, President Trump has been a vocal proponent of a diplomatic solution, even advising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to refrain from military action against Iran's nuclear sites while negotiations were underway. The Trump administration had previously extended what was described as a "detailed and acceptable" proposal to Iran, aiming to curb its nuclear program.
However, the President has also made it clear that should diplomacy fail, he would not hesitate to lead efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear capabilities by force.
A significant hurdle in these negotiations has been Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity. President Trump has consistently maintained that this capacity must be dismantled, while Iran has remained steadfast in its desire to retain the ability to weaponize uranium.
Critics have drawn parallels between Trump's proposed deal and the agreement brokered by President Barack Obama, from which Trump withdrew in 2018. Despite these comparisons, President Trump has shown a preference for diplomatic avenues over military intervention, at least for the time being.
