In the lead-up to national holidays, it's not uncommon to see political commentators advising their viewers on how to engage in political discourse with their conservative relatives.
A notable example of this was in 2019 when Joy Reid, then a host on MSNBC, advised her viewers to simplify their language when discussing the impeachment of Donald Trump with their relatives during Thanksgiving.
"Do not worry about trying to explain the cast of characters or the very overused term, quid pro quo,'" Reid said. "Most people cant say it, spell it or understand it. What were actually talking about here is not a pithy Latin phrase. Its something a lot simpler bribery and extortion Even Uncle Roscoe and Auntie Carol ought to understand that."
However, as reported by Western Journal, both impeachment attempts against Trump were unsuccessful, and Reid's advice may now seem misguided. The trend of using national holidays as platforms for political discussions is not limited to Thanksgiving, nor is it exclusive to media personalities like Reid.
Hillary Clinton, the former Democratic Party standard-bearer, recently encouraged her followers to discuss Trump's proposed budget during the Memorial Day weekend.
In a post, she wrote, "Im giving you a mission for this Memorial Day holiday weekend. I want you to talk to two people friends, neighbors, cookout attendees about why Trumps proposed budget would be a disaster for American kids. We owe the next generation every chance, and this isnt it."
However, Clinton's call for open discussion was met with criticism when she turned off the comments on her post, effectively shutting down any potential dialogue on her platform. This isn't the first time Clinton has been criticized for this approach.
She previously faced backlash when she posted about Trump receiving an offer of a 747-8 from Qatar, but disabled comments on the post.
Critics argue that Clinton's decision to encourage political discussions on Memorial Day, a day dedicated to remembering America's fallen, is inappropriate. This incident, along with her loss in the 2016 election, continues to fuel criticism of Clinton's political strategies.
Despite the criticism, Clinton remains a prominent figure in American politics. There is speculation that she may encourage her followers to discuss her potential candidacy in the 2028 elections during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
In other news, FBI officials recently announced the arrest of a 28-year-old Defense Intelligence Agency employee. The individual is accused of attempting to transmit national defense information to an officer or agent of a foreign government.
