In a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug cartels, Jorge Humberto Figueroa, infamously known as "El Perris," was killed during a raid in Sinaloa.

The operation, conducted on Friday, resulted in the death of the cartel leader, who was wanted by the United States with a $1 million bounty on his head. Figueroa faced charges of conspiracy to import and distribute fentanyl into the U.S., a substance that has wreaked havoc on American communities.

According to CBS News, the raid was part of a broader strategy to restore peace in Sinaloa, a region plagued by violence due to the activities of powerful drug cartels. Public Safety Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch detailed the operation on social media, stating, "As part of the strategy to build peace in Sinaloa, an operation was carried out to arrest Jorge Humberto 'N', alias 'El Perris', elements of @Defensamx1 were strongly attacked by armed men, so after repelling the aggression, in self-defense, said subject identified as one of the main generators of violence in the entity lost his life."

Harfuch further noted Figueroa's involvement in orchestrating attacks on authorities in 2019 in Culiacn, as well as his connections to homicides and kidnappings that have disrupted the region's stability.

The Sinaloa state, home to the cartel bearing the same name, has been embroiled in a violent conflict between rival factions, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths since September.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had sought Figueroa for his role in fentanyl trafficking and money laundering. His demise marks a critical moment in the ongoing efforts to dismantle the cartel's operations and restore order to the region.
