Alex Soros, the far-left billionaire and Democratic donor, has recently come under intense scrutiny following his condemnation of the tragic killing of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.
C.
Soros, who is the heir to George Soros' substantial fortune and the controversial Open Society Foundations (OSF), described the murders as "evil in its most basic form" and labeled the attack "a brutal antisemitic act [that] must be condemned in the strongest terms."
However, critics have been quick to highlight what they perceive as hypocrisy, given the OSF's history of financially supporting radical anti-Israel organizations.
According to The Post Millennial, the victims, Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky, were Israeli diplomats who were engaged to be married. They were tragically shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum.
The alleged shooter, Elias Rodriguez, was recorded shouting "Free, free Palestine!" after his arrest. Police reports indicate that Rodriguez approached a group of four individuals from behind, opened fire, and then entered the museum, where security detained him.
The reaction to Soros' statement has been overwhelmingly critical, with many accusing him of a double standard. Conservative voices on social media have been particularly vocal. Dr. Sheila Nazarian, a conservative commentator, accused Soros of financial complicity, stating, "Your family supported this financially. You are evil incarnate and a traitor to your people and this country." Eitan Fischberger added that "Alex Soros funds the revolutionary Marxist group the shooter belonged to," while political activist Kimberly Klacik questioned Soros' sincerity with a simple, "Really, Alex?"
This backlash underscores a persistent concern among conservatives and pro-Israel advocates: that the Soros empire is actively supporting groups that vilify Israel, encourage antisemitism, and undermine Western democratic values under the guise of human rights and social justice. In 2023, Israels Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Amichai Chikli, expressed skepticism about the younger Soros, describing him as "a replica of his father." Chikli told Fox News, "We have no expectation that his son will be a big Zionist."
Chikli further criticized OSF's financial backing of Human Rights Watch, which has falsely accused Israel of being an apartheid state, and J Street, an organization that claims to be pro-Israel but has often sided with Iran and the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, OSF has funded smaller Palestinian organizations within Israel, such as the NGO Adalah, which calls for transforming Israel into a binational state and labels the country a colonial power.
George Soros himself has faced condemnation from Israeli officials for donating over $15 million to networks of NGOs that provide political cover for Hamas and promote anti-Israel propaganda. Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, remarked, "George Soros donations to organizations that seek the destruction of the State of Israel as a Jewish state is shameful. They have never been about real peace or any solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
The controversy surrounding Alex Soros' recent remarks and the OSF's funding choices continues to fuel debate over the influence of wealthy donors in shaping narratives and policies that impact Israel and the broader Middle East.
