In the wake of President Donald Trump's election, the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) has experienced a significant surge in recruitment, a stark contrast to the challenges faced during the Biden administration.
An internal memo from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as reported by the Daily Caller, highlights a remarkable turnaround in CBP morale and performance. The memo reveals a 44 percent increase in CBP applications from January to May, compared to the same period in 2024 under President Joe Biden and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
According to The Post Millennial, the tenure of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has been marked by a renewed focus on border security, resulting in a notable improvement in CBP operations. During Biden's presidency, the agency grappled with a severe morale crisis, exacerbated by a surge in suicides among its agents.
The border crisis under Biden's watch saw over 8.5 million encounters and 1.7 million known gotaways, with hundreds of individuals on the terror watchlist crossing the border.
The Daily Caller reports that the morale issues were so severe that CBP resorted to hiring a "suicidologist" in 2021 to address the alarming rate of suicides among its ranks. The Biden administration's handling of illegal immigration left CBP stretched thin, struggling to maintain control over the border.
In contrast, President Trump's administration has ushered in a period of revitalization for the agency. Illegal border crossings and encounters have plummeted, and the Secret Service, along with the military, has also seen a boost in recruitment.
A DHS spokesperson emphasized the administration's commitment to supporting law enforcement, stating, For four years, the previous administration demoralized and denied resources to our brave men and women in law enforcement, including in the Secret Service. We are reinvigorating the Secret Service and providing it with the resources our brave men and women need to do their jobs.
This renewed focus on border security and law enforcement underscores the administration's dedication to restoring order and morale within these critical agencies.
The significant increase in CBP applications and the decline in illegal crossings reflect a broader trend of enhanced security measures and support for law enforcement personnel. As the administration continues to prioritize these efforts, the impact on national security and agency morale remains a focal point of its agenda.
