In a recent development, a proposed federal class action lawsuit alleges that Elon Musk's political action committee, America PAC, failed to fulfill its promise of payment to registered voters in swing states during the 2020 U.
S. election.
The committee had pledged to remunerate voters for signing a petition or referring other voters.
The lawsuit suggests that this unfulfilled promise may have impacted the election's outcome, in which Republican President Donald Trump triumphed over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
As reported by Thomson/Reuters, Musk's America PAC played a significant role in the lead-up to the November election. The committee offered voters in seven key states $47, later increased to $100, for signing a petition in support of the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, registered voters were promised payments for referring other voters in these states who also signed the petition. However, the plaintiffs, residents of Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Georgia, allege that America PAC breached its contract by failing to pay in full.
The lawsuit, filed on May 8 in Philadelphia, seeks to represent a class of all individuals who signed or referred someone to sign the petition and were not compensated as promised. Musk, the chief executive of Tesla and currently the world's wealthiest individual, has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
In addition to the alleged breach of contract, Musk's PAC had also committed to a daily giveaway of $1 million to a random individual who signed the petition.
