Carl Heastie is one of the three most powerful officials elected in New York.
Hes become well-known for being soft on crime. People question whether thats the best idea after a man was shot in front of his office during a drive-by.
According to the New York Post, At least 10 shots were fired from a white BMW sedan on Gun Hill Road and Fenton Avenue at around 3 PM, with multiple gunmen believed to have opened fire outside the speakers one-story District office, sources said. Staff at Heasties office called local authorities when they heard the gunshots.
The victim was only 20 years old. His name has not been released. He was rushed to Jacobi Hospital Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Then, his condition was updated to stable.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Investigators are unsure whether the victim was targeted or the shooting was random. They are investigating whether the white BMW is the same car involved in a shooting a mile away. This shooting happened earlier and involved three gunmen. Two men stepped outside the vehicle while a third one opened fire on a group of people from the sunroof. No one was injured during this shooting.
The NY Post says, Albany lawmakers have been stuck in negotiations over a late budget for weeks, but reportedly finally struck a deal Monday after Democratic supermajorities in the state Senate and Assembly agreed to eliminate a controversial bail-reform measure.
Heastie has been very vocal about supporting the 2019 criminal reform measures. The controversial changes did away with bail for many non-violent crimes, including misdemeanors. However, critics of the reform say it put criminals back on the streets, resulting in more violence.
Thats not the only way this Democrat leader is helping raise the crime rate in New York. According to The New York Post, Heastie has also backed the states Raise the Age law, which upped the age for criminal liability for suspects to 18. Since the law took effect in October 2019, the city has seen a spike in the number of underage homicide victims and suspects, NYPD data show.
There has been a jump of over 90% in burglaries and a 7% increase in major crimes in the area.
