Janet Yellen, who held the position of Treasury Secretary under the Biden administration, encountered a stark reality on Monday following her remarks on CNBC.
She had dismissed the notion of revitalizing American manufacturing as a "pipe dream," thereby undermining one of President Donald Trump's key tariff objectives. Her comments were swiftly countered by a significant announcement from Nvidia, a leading semiconductor company, which revealed plans to manufacture its AI supercomputers entirely within the United States. The company also committed to investing half a trillion dollars in AI infrastructure through domestic partnerships.
According to The Daily Wire, the "Trump War Room" account on X highlighted the irony of Yellen's statement in light of Nvidia's announcement. The account noted, "Just before [Nvidia]s groundbreaking announcement to manufacture AI supercomputers in America, Janet Yellen went on CNBC to dismiss the American manufacturing renaissance as a pipe dream. Yet, as Nvidia showed, more companies are choosing to BUILD IN THE USA and this is just the beginning." The account further remarked on President Trump's foresight, quoting his post on Truth Social: "THE BEST DEFINITION OF INTELLIGENCE IS THE ABILITY TO PREDICT THE FUTURE!!!", suggesting Yellen's inability to foresee the resurgence of American manufacturing.
Yellen's skepticism about the feasibility of restoring manufacturing to the United States was not an isolated opinion. Recent media coverage has featured economic experts cautioning that Trump's tariffs might not successfully lure companies back to U.S. soil, with surveys indicating that many businesses are deterred by high costs. Nonetheless, Yellen's interview went beyond merely doubting the likelihood of a manufacturing revival. She questioned whether such a goal was broadly desirable, adding another layer to the debate.
The "Rapid Response" account for Trump's White House on X responded robustly to Yellen's comments, criticizing the politicians who have historically outsourced American jobs. The account stated, "The same politicians who sold American workers out to foreign countries for decades now say an American manufacturing renaissance is a pipe dream that isnt even a desirable goal. 1) [Trump] doesnt accept that. 2) That attitude is how we got here. 3) They hate you."
Mike Waltz, serving as Trump's national security adviser, also weighed in, contrasting the current administration's approach with that of President Trump. Waltz asserted, "The previous administration accepted defeat and raced to off shore jobs and U.S. investment.
President Trump has brought in Trillions and Trillions of dollars of foreign investment in record time!" This underscores the ongoing debate over the direction of U.S. economic policy and the role of manufacturing in the nation's future.
