New Jersey currently has one all-female prison.
However, when we look at the term female, it now often includes biological men that identify as women. Trans-women are now included in the population of the all-female prison, which resulted in two biological women becoming pregnant last year. According to The Post Millennial, there are currently 24 biological men housed in prison with women. Now, protestors are taking to the streets to protect incarcerated women.
The hashtag #GetMenOut has quickly become popular as people continue to pressure New Jersey legislation into doing more to protect biological women.
Justice Speaks members recently spoke out about the issue, citing letters that women from behind bars wrote regarding the matter. According to The Post Millennial, Dawn Jackson, 51, a biological female and victim of years of sexual abuse herself, wrote about the trauma she feels living in prison, Being subjected to live amongst (trans women) who remain equipped with their manhood is extremely overwhelming and difficult for me. Am I living amongst any rapists? (Trans women) do not belong in closed/confined prison settings meant to house women/females born feminine.
Another inmate points out that some trans inmates are sex offenders, and once incarcerated with women, they may stop their hormone injections and continue living as a male. The inmate, Kokila Hiatt, says that the biological men then engage in sexual relationships with women, bully them if they disagree with them, and con women into purchasing things through commissary for them. Another issue is the power dynamic when housing men and women together.
We see this in inmate Perry Cerf, a man who now identifies as a woman housed at the womens prison. Hes in prison for attacking and killing a sex worker. After that, he licked up all her blood because he loved the taste. According to Cerf, they are Lucifers servants and have been sent to Earth to sin and bring about pain and suffering. Cerf initially identified as a male and was in a male prison. Then, he was put in solitary confinement for assaulting other people. However, now he identifies as a female and is housed in an all-female prison.
The prison, Edna Mahan, doesnt have the best record for protecting the women it houses. According to The NY Post, A 2020 Department of Justice report found Edna Mahan violates the constitutional rights of prisoners in its care, resulting in serious harm and the substantial risk of serious harm.
The report references sexual abuse by staff, stating, "Specifically, Edna Mahan fails to protect women prisoners from harm due to sexual abuse by staff."
