Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado has officially declared his intention to run for governor in the upcoming election, marking a significant shift in his political career.
"Im running for governor to build a brighter future in Colorado and give people a chance at a better life," Bennet stated, emphasizing his belief that effective solutions are unlikely to emerge from "Washingtons broken politics" but rather from local initiatives.
As reported by Yahoo News, Bennet, who has represented Colorado in the Senate since 2009, has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, notably the expansion of the child tax credit. His political journey included a brief presidential campaign in 2020. Recently, Bennet has expressed dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party's trajectory, notably voicing concerns about President Joe Bidens age and physical capabilities.
He also hinted at the need for fresh leadership within the Senate Democratic caucus following Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's decision not to oppose a government funding bill. "Its important for people to know when its time to go," Bennet remarked during a recent town hall meeting.
The political landscape in Colorado, which has not seen a Republican governor since 2002, appears favorable for Bennet as he seeks to succeed the term-limited Governor Jared Polis. However, his candidacy adds to the growing list of Senate Democrats, including Gary Peters, Tina Smith, and Jeanne Shaheen, who are stepping away from their roles.
Should Bennet secure the governorship, he would have the authority to appoint his own successor in the Senate, a plan he confirmed to The Colorado Sun. Potential candidates for his Senate seat include Representatives Jason Crow and Joe Neguse, both prominent figures within the Democratic Party.
