Stephen Colbert, host of The Late Show, commenced his Thursday monologue with a direct appeal to what he termed the "cabal of financial and governmental elites who pull all the strings behind the scenes."
His remarks came in response to President Donald Trump's announcement of reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries, a move aimed at rectifying what the President described as decades of exploitation of American taxpayers. Trump asserted that these taxpayers "have been ripped off for more than 50 years."
Colbert's monologue, as reported by Breitbart, was laced with sarcasm as he questioned, "Anyone feeling liberated?" He likened the economic downturn to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, quipping, "Worst day for our economy since COVID. Just a little reminder: This time, hes the disease."
The comedian further speculated on the existence of the so-called "deep state," suggesting that if such a powerful entity existed, it would have intervened to prevent the economic fallout. "Because if there was, they wouldve stopped this shit," Colbert remarked. He continued his satirical plea to the elites, urging them to "put a pause on your 5G chip JFK Jr. adrenochrome chemtrail orgy and jump in here cuz were fucking dying."
Throughout his 13-minute segment, Colbert, whose net worth is estimated at $75 million, did not delve into the rationale behind Trump's tariff strategy.
The President's actions are rooted in addressing the adverse effects of so-called free trade agreements, such as NAFTA, which have been linked to the loss of approximately 4.5 million manufacturing jobs. These agreements have significantly impacted the American middle class, particularly in small and rural towns, eroding generational wealth and economic stability.
