In the midst of a tumultuous political climate, a self-proclaimed "MAGA leftist" has voiced her belief that President Donald Trump's disruptive tariffs could be the antidote to the nation's ongoing "masculinity crisis."
Batya Ungar-Sargon, a renowned columnist, shared her perspective during a recent conversation with Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, attributing the crisis to the outsourcing of manual labor jobs overseas, a move that, in her view, has left countless American men bereft of purpose.
According to The Independent, Ungar-Sargon argued, "Donald Trump is actually saying 'no more' to this and to the crisis in masculinity which is of course why young men feel so attracted to what hes offering." She further contended that Trump's 2024 presidential victory was largely due to the Democratic Party's failure to support young men.
Campos-Duffy concurred with Ungar-Sargon's assessment, adding that the struggles faced by young men also have repercussions for young women. "When young men are not doing well, its not good for young women either," she stated.
In a previous conversation with Bill Maher on his Real Time show, Ungar-Sargon lauded Trump's dedication to the working class, describing his agenda as "socially moderate, anti-war, and anti-free-trade protectionist." She also reiterated her belief that Trump's executive orders align with a "leftist agenda," a claim that Maher dismissed as nonsensical.
When questioned about Trump's tariffs, which recently sent shockwaves through global markets, Ungar-Sargon maintained that such economic policies are crucial for upholding the "American Dream." She criticized Wall Street for undermining Trump, stating, "But the rage that you see on Wall Street what they are trying to do here is they are shorting the presidents agenda."
She further argued that Wall Street, after decades of preferential treatment, believes it should control the country and its elected officials. Ungar-Sargon suggested that previous administrations had allowed a "spiritual dissemination" and economic exploitation of the working class, particularly through immigration policies related to manual labor jobs.
"We shipped jobs that gave men who work with their hands for a living and rely on brawn and physicality off to other countries to build up their middle class," she explained. She also criticized past administrations for employing "millions of illegals" in sectors such as construction, manufacturing, landscaping, and janitorial services, which she believes "used to give men access to the American Dream."
However, not everyone agrees with Ungar-Sargon's perspective. Democratic strategist Paul Begala argued on CNN that Trump's aggressive trade war is harming the very voters who put him in office. He suggested that this could present an opportunity for Democrats as key MAGA supporters waver in the face of economic downturn.
His comments followed MAGA supporter Joe Rogan's criticism of Trump for escalating tariffs against Canada and incarcerating innocent people in high-security prisons in El Salvador. "Why are we upset at Canada? This is stupid, this over tariffs [...] We got to become friends with Canada again, this is so ridiculous. I can't believe there is anti-American, anti-Canadian sentiment going on. It's the dumbest **** feud," Rogan said during an episode of his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience.
Ungar-Sargon, who has been vocal about her disdain for "woke" and progressive liberal ideas, has authored two books on the subject. Her first, Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy, criticizes mainstream news outlets for promoting such ideologies. Her second, Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America's Working Men and Women, discusses the erosion of the "American Dream" and was published ahead of the 2024 U.S. election.
