While states like Florida fight for rights, such as certain privacy rights, other areas are paving the way for transgender individuals to become entitled.
For example, an Australian bank is giving employees plenty of entitlements.
Suncorp, the Australian bank, starts by giving employees up to 12 months of unpaid leave so that they can affirm their gender identity. Employees will also be eligible for up to six weeks of paid Gender Affirmation Leave. According to Fox News, Employees can use the leave to come out as transgender to friends and family, change their pronouns, buy clothes that match their gender identity, change their name or gender on official documents, or undergo surgery and hormone therapy.
Catherine Dixon is Suncorps executive manager of people and culture in New Zealand. Dixon states that the controversial move is critical to be inclusive. She pointed out that transgender people must be able to take that time out to affirm their gender.
Some employees praised the decision, saying new employees would feel comfortable and trust the company.
The bank points out that the unemployment rate among transgender individuals is three times higher than the national average, which the company wants to address with its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
A few employees needed to be more supportive of the move. They took the chance to provide feedback as an opportunity to say what types of leave the bank should offer. However, a spokesperson says they dont understand the process it takes to be transgender or to become a different gender. For example, standard surgical procedures for changing genders are often only available during working hours. This also applies to doctors appointments.
Many that oppose movements like this one say that its an entitlement other people dont get, even if they have doctors appointments or require surgery for a medical condition.
