President Donald Trump has reportedly instructed the military to devise plans for reclaiming the Panama Canal, a move aimed at countering China's expanding influence in the region.
During a recent address to Congress, Trump declared, "To further enhance our national security, my administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal." However, the specifics of what "reclaiming" entails remain unclear, as noted by two U.S. officials familiar with the strategy, according to NBC News.
The White House's initiative comes amid concerns over China's growing presence near the canal, which Trump views as a potential security threat. He has accused China of establishing ports at both ends of the canal, suggesting this could enable Beijing to exert control over the strategic waterway.
As reported by NBC News, the U.S. Southern Command is actively working on plans to fulfill Trump's objective, with options ranging from collaboration with the Panamanian military to a more aggressive approach involving U.S. forces. However, officials have indicated that a forceful takeover is unlikely unless other measures fail to achieve the desired outcome.
The Panama Canal, a crucial maritime passage completed in 1914 with significant U.S. investment, was transferred to Panama under a 1999 treaty. This agreement, updated in 1978, ensures the U.S. retains the right to defend the canal's neutrality.
Despite Trump's assertions, Panamanian President Jos Ral Mulino has reiterated that the canal remains under Panamanian control. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian has dismissed U.S. claims of interference, stating, "China supports Panamas sovereignty over the canal and is committed to maintaining its status as a permanently neutral international waterway."
As tensions between the U.S. and China escalate, particularly in the context of an ongoing trade war, Trump's administration appears determined to bolster American influence in the region. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is expected to review military proposals concerning the canal ahead of a planned visit to Panama.
