In a recent appearance on Fox News, Tom Homan, the border czar, expressed his strong disapproval of the Democratic leaders' endorsement of sanctuary city policies, arguing that such policies pose a significant risk to public safety.
According to the Daily Caller, Homan's comments were in response to the testimonies of Democratic Mayors Michelle Wu of Boston, Brandon Johnson of Chicago, Mike Johnston of Denver, and Eric Adams of New York City before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
The mayors were discussing their cities' non-cooperation policies with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Homan was particularly critical of Wu's assertion that sanctuary policies enhance the safety of cities.
Homan told Laura Ingraham on "The Ingraham Angle," I didnt see that hearing, but thank you for playing that because now I want to sleep like a baby. Because if I get to live in her mind rent free every day, thats kind of cool. I love my job. I work for the greatest President in my lifetime, referring to President Trump.
He continued, Were making America safe again. President Trump promised the American people that were going to shut down illegal alien crime in this country. Thats exactly what were doing. Mayor Wu should be standing side by side with me.
Homan also addressed Johnson's claim that welcoming migrants reduces crime rates. He countered this by citing recent ICE operations in Chicago that resulted in the arrest of two murderers, child predators, and several members of the Tren De Aragua (TDA). Homan argued that these actions made the city safer and criticized the mayors for their lack of understanding. He stated, President Trump made a promise. Were going to prioritize public safety threats and national security threats.
Under Homan's leadership, ICE has made approximately 30,000 arrests. He said, Were at about 30,000 arrests. Most of them are public safety threats. There are some collaterals, and why is that? Because people like him and the mayor of Boston and the mayor of Denver, they dont let us arrest the bad guy in the safety and security of the county jail where the officer is safe, the alien is safe, the community is safe. They release him in the community. So we got to go to the community and find him. And when we find that bad guy, if hes with other illegal aliens that arent a criminal threat, but theyre in the country illegally, theyre going too.
The conversation also touched on criticism from Democrats, including comments from Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters, who accused President Donald Trump of exploiting victims families for political gain.
Homan dismissed these accusations, saying, Give me a break. Americans are dying. Ive met hundreds of angel moms and dads who buried their children. Another congressman talked to the architect of family separation. Yeah, we separated families, but we prosecuted parents, and the children cant go to jail with them. That happens to U.S. citizen parents hundreds of times across this country every day. But they dont talk about the half a million children that were trafficked into this country. They cant find 300,000 of them during sex trafficking and forced labor.
In recent years, ICE has detained several sex offenders who were previously released by Massachusetts authorities, despite requests for holding them for deportation. For example, in June 2024, ICE agents apprehended a 24-year-old Guatemalan illegal immigrant in Bristol County, who was out on bail for charges of child rape. In April 2024, they took custody of a repeat public lewdness offender from the Cape Verde Islands.
In a November 21 interview with the Denverite, Johnston suggested that Denvers residents and local law enforcement could oppose the Trump administrations deportation efforts.
During a Fox News appearance on Nov. 25, Homan, then Trumps nominee for border czar, cited 8 USC 1324 (iii) and accused Johnston of being prepared to commit a felony to resist these efforts. This highlights the ongoing tension between local and federal authorities over immigration enforcement, a contentious issue that continues to divide the nation.
