The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has allocated nearly $2.5 million in Rapid Unsheltered Survivor Housing (RUSH) funds to North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and the city of Houston.
This financial aid aims to support Americans affected by recent hurricanes and severe storms, as announced by HUD Secretary Scott Turner. This latest distribution elevates the total RUSH funding for these areas to $11.4 million.
According to Breitbart, Secretary Turner emphasized the administration's dedication to assisting individuals and families in these states who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. He stated, "Todays RUSH funding underscores the administrations commitment to helping individuals and families in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and have needs not fully met by existing federal disaster relief programs."
Turner further elaborated on the unique role of HUD's RUSH program, noting, "While many of our nations federal disaster programs help Americans return to their homes or rebuild a home in the wake of natural disasters, HUDs RUSH program ensures we fill the gap of unmet needs for individuals experiencing homelessness in a disaster area."
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 resulted in at least 42 fatalities in the Houston area, with financial analysts at Moody's estimating the storm's economic impact to be between $2.5 billion and $4.5 billion. Meanwhile, Hurricane Helene inflicted severe damage on the southeastern states, with North Carolina and South Carolina bearing the brunt of the loss. The death toll reached 49 in South Carolina and a staggering 106 in North Carolina, where state officials have projected a record $59.6 billion in damages and recovery needs.
"North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas need support," Turner reiterated in his press release. "HUD will continue to prioritize disaster recovery efforts as we uplift vulnerable Americans impacted by disasters through no fault of their own." The secretary's press office also took to social media to challenge the perception that HUD is incapable of delivering effective disaster relief and homelessness assistance. The office declared, "Fact: HUD just released $2.5 million in Rapid Unsheltered Survivor Housing (RUSH) funds to help the most vulnerable left behind by natural disasters. Will the MSM report on this?"
This funding initiative underscores the importance of addressing the needs of those left most vulnerable by natural disasters, particularly in regions where traditional federal aid may fall short. The RUSH program represents a targeted effort to bridge these gaps, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support to rebuild their lives.
