In a recent development, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who chairs the House Oversight Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Subcommittee, issued a stern warning regarding potential criminal activities within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
During a hearing on Wednesday, Greene expressed her intent to pursue criminal referrals, citing concerns over USAID's involvement in "potentially criminal" activities.
"This committee, based on this hearing and witness testimonies, will consider recommending investigations and criminal referrals," Greene declared, following the opening statements of several witnesses. One witness alleged that USAID had supported terrorist activities, lacked proper oversight, and engaged in actions that could be deemed criminal.
According to Breitbart, Greg Roman, the executive director of the Middle East Forum, emphasized the need for action, stating, "This committee should take action to ensure that the Department of Justice acts on it and does everything [in] Congresss power to not just investigate but refer criminal actions to the proper authorities."
Greene further criticized USAID, accusing it of being influenced by partisan interests. She argued, "The Democrat-run USAID should not get to use our federal government, our U.S. taxpayer dollars, as their party piggy bank to push their radical agenda in countries that we have no business giving money to."
Greene also raised questions about the potential misuse of USAID funds, suggesting, "Maybe we should consider investigating whether USAID funding has made it back to Democrat campaigns. Has it affected elections?"
Her remarks extended to President Biden, as she reiterated a common Republican assertion that Biden, during his vice presidency, threatened to withhold a $1 billion USAID grant to pressure Ukraine into dismissing Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin. This move, she claimed, was intended to protect his son, Hunter Biden, who was associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
In response to these allegations, Primorac countered, "No, we call that corruption." Greene concluded the hearing by reiterating her call for criminal referrals, asserting, "What we have heard today is that USAID has been used as a tool by Democrats to brainwash the world with globalist propaganda to force regime changes around the world." She added a grave warning, "But if USAID funded terrorism that resulted in the death of Americans, then this committee will be making criminal referrals."
The unfolding situation raises critical questions about the oversight and accountability of foreign aid programs, as well as the potential implications for U.S. foreign policy and domestic politics.
